Remnants • Dorin Goian

Dorin Goian’s series entitled “Remnants” is an instance of a major theme that emerges from the impact of the creative potential of a migrant or exilic consciousness for the ongoing cultural forms. “Remnants” series fits well into the the so called “migrant turn” in cultural studies. The concept, along other two – the non-returnee (a popular over a centure-aged Russian term, невозвращенец, Russian, along Romanian, is still a lingua franca in today’s Republic of Moldova); and the opposite of the non-returnee – the returnee could be easily incorporated into a Dictionary of migration studies.
Dorin Goian is a returnee although his diasporic experience stretches for a fairly long period. Although, the notion of returnee and the remnant are to some extent overlapping. According to some UN reports the population of the small, just a bit under 4 million people, young state of The Republic of Moldova, is undergoing a massive population drought. In the last 25 years, more than a half of its peoples left their country’s territory, searching for better paid jobs, while the country is struggling with an ongoing economic, social and political turmoil, yet the state authorities insist on a beautiful image of the motherland, progress, development, europeanisation, whatever this means. Dorin Goian is trying to record with his camera the remains of this massive exodus – the Remnants.
